I thought more and more about balancing darkness and light in my stories. I’ve even pondered whether to set aside my horror novel or continue writing. After much prayerful consideration, I’m compelled to press on with the story, but with a stronger focus. This novel is not just about the darkness; it’s about the light battling and ultimately overcoming that darkness. In our world, we are surrounded by darkness, and we need to see characters battling it, realizing that there is only One who can truly fight this battle. We must submit to His power and authority and allow Him to use us for His purposes.
Reflecting on the first chapter of Haggai, it’s clear that keeping our priorities straight is essential. My priority in writing this novel is to explore a faith that can navigate life’s complications, rather than merely highlighting the darkness that surrounds us. The darkness serves as a vehicle—a villain in an epic story—that must be vanquished by the hero, who can only succeed by relying on God. The horror genre needs Christian voices to show that there is victory over evil and that this victory has already been won through Christ.
In my recent dreams, I saw a Native American man on a horse and a boy on a tricycle, both seemingly guiding me from scene to scene. These dreams, though unsettling, have reminded me that I can’t let darkness guide the story. Instead, I must let the Holy Spirit lead so that God’s work in the lead character’s life and the lives around him is evident. The evil is merely a prop on the stage where the protagonist fights to turn his life around, even as the darkness closes in and threatens those he loves most.
Neither the man on the horse nor the boy on the tricycle (both symbolic of a force at work here) will dictate my narrative. I will allow the Lord to guide me, and I must keep my heart right with Him so that I can write for Him. This journey is about more than just completing a novel; it’s about living out my faith through my writing, trusting that God’s light will shine through even the darkest of stories.
As I continue this project, my prayer is for discernment, strength, and a clear vision of how to portray the triumph of light over darkness. May this story not only entertain but also inspire readers to see the power of faith and the ultimate victory that comes from trusting in God.
