Choosing My Morning Cup

One morning, as I settled in for my Bible study, I decided to skip my usual cup of coffee. Lately, I’ve felt led to make cleaner choices in what I eat and drink, so I reached for a box of tea instead.

Then came the decision: black tea or green tea?

Curious about their differences and benefits, I did a little research. I learned that both teas come from the same plant—Camellia sinensis—but are processed in unique ways. Black tea is fully oxidized, which gives it that rich, dark color and robust flavor. Green tea, on the other hand, is gently steamed or pan-fired, preserving its lighter hue and more delicate taste.

Black tea has more caffeine, offering a stronger boost of energy—sometimes exactly what we need to power through the demands of the day. Green tea contains less caffeine but is packed with antioxidants called catechins, which support heart health, brain function, and the body’s natural detox processes.

As I read about these differences, I couldn’t help but think about how similar this is to our walk with God.

Just like these two teas come from the same plant, we all come from the same Creator. Genesis 1:27 reminds us:
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Yet, we don’t all look or grow the same way. Some of us have walked through seasons of intense heat and pressure—like black tea—emerging stronger, with deeper character and resilience. Others have been preserved in gentler seasons, maintaining a certain freshness and simplicity—like green tea. Neither is better or worse; each has its own purpose and blessings to offer.

This brought to mind Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 12, where he describes the body of Christ:
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.”
Each of us brings unique strengths and testimonies to serve God’s Kingdom.

I also thought about the importance of renewal. Green tea’s antioxidants reminded me of the way God cleanses our hearts and minds. Romans 12:2 says:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Just as green tea helps rid the body of toxins, God’s Word purifies us from bitterness, fear, and pride.

Black tea’s energizing properties made me reflect on Isaiah 40:31:
“…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…”
There are days when we need that extra boost—a deeper time in prayer and worship—to give us the strength to keep going.

In the end, I chose green tea this morning. It felt like the right way to begin the day—a lighter, cleansing start. But more importantly, I chose to fill my cup with His presence. Because no matter what’s in my mug, it’s His Spirit that truly sustains me.

May your morning routine, whatever it looks like, be an opportunity to pause and remember that God meets you right where you are—ready to refresh, strengthen, and prepare you for whatever lies ahead.
