This summer, while visiting my cousin and his wife at their home on a quiet lake in the interior of Michigan, I found myself captivated by an unexpected teacher—the swan.
Each evening, as the sun began to set and the waters turned a soft shade of rose and gold, we would take the boat out across the nearby lakes and their winding channels. It became our tradition to watch for the swans. Whole families of them drifted along the shorelines, tucked into hidden coves where the world seemed to slow down.
I was struck by their beauty—those white feathers gleaming like polished ivory, their movements so fluid and serene. But I was even more intrigued when I learned more about them. Swans mate for life. They are fiercely protective of their young. They glide over the water with such grace, but underneath the surface, their feet paddle tirelessly to keep them moving.
The more I watched and read about these creatures, the more I saw parallels to our spiritual lives:
-
Commitment and Faithfulness: Swans are known for their lifelong devotion to their mate. In a world that often treats commitment as disposable, they remind us of the covenant we share with God—a relationship built on faithfulness, even when life feels uncertain.
-
Peace and Strength: On the surface, swans seem almost motionless. But underneath, they work constantly to move forward. Isn’t that much like our walk with Christ? Others may see the calm exterior, but God sees the daily effort—the prayers whispered in the dark, the decisions made to trust Him when everything feels overwhelming.
-
Seeking Quiet Waters: Swans retreat to secluded corners of the lake to rest and protect their young. Our souls, too, need quiet spaces. Psalm 23 reminds us: “He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” We weren’t meant to live in constant noise. We need time away from distractions to commune with our Shepherd.
Those evening boat rides became moments for me to reflect on God, who created such beauty and wove lessons into the simplest of things—even a swan gliding silently through dusk.
As we move through our own seasons, may we learn to embody the swan’s grace, faithfulness, and commitment to rest in the quiet places where God meets us.
